There's an ordinary French word that nobody, apparently, has ever bothered to translate into English:
francophonie, meaning the existence of French, in many societies throughout the world, as an everyday operational language. Let me fill in this gap. Since the use of telephones is referred to, in English, as
telephony, there's no reason why the use of French should not be called
Francophony. Yesterday, March 20, was
Francophony Day for 200 million French-speaking people throughout the world: a celebration organized by OIF [
Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie]. Among other things, Francophony Day reminds us that the next Tour de France and Bastille Day are less than four months away.
