an Australian expatriate in France
There is always hope. ;-)
Once upon a time, as Marx observed, religion was the opium of the people. However, in the United Kingdom and the British Commonwealth, religion has always been a rather dull affair (since we have neither papal splendors nor tales of ecclesiastic sin), and it went totally stale long ago. Meanwhile, ever since the abdication of Edward VIII, royalty has become more and more popular (literally, a "people" phenomenon), indeed vulgar. So, it's a great ersatz opiate, far more modern and spectacular than old-fashioned stuff such as religion. And Princess Catherine has appeared on the scene as a real-life sexy Cinderella in a transparent costume. So, for those who want to get high, this marriage has been powerful stuff.
